Coconut oil is incredibly versatile and can replace dozens of products in your kitchen and bathroom shelves. Below are ten easy ways to use this amazing oil every day. Just make sure you buy the raw, virgin, unprocessed kind (organic is ideal of course). If possible, it should be stored in glass bottles. Coconut oil should harden into solid white at room temperature though in the Hong Kong humidity, it is often liquid and clear. Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight if possible (this is the rule for ALL oils by the way!).
Practise Oil Pulling
Swish 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth daily for up to 20 minutes then spit to help with gum issues, whiten teeth and freshen breath- this ancient Ayurvedic habit does wonder for your health, with the oil pulling toxins out of your system.
Make Raw Chocolate
It only takes a few minutes- mix equal parts raw cacao powder and coconut oil and add sweetener of your choice. Harden in freezer for 20 minutes et voila!
Some people swear by it- it is naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal so it makes sense that it would help neutralize odors caused by bacteria. Use on its own or make a paste by mixing it with baking powder and a few drops of an essential oil of your choice.
Cook with Coconut
Coconut oil is ideal for high temperature cooking methods like deep frying and stir frying. The oil’s bond stay intact (as opposed to vegetable oils like olive) so no free radicals are released.
Indulge Your Tresses
Coconut oil makes an ideal hair treatment- just massage into your scalp and through your hair and leave on overnight. The oil helps repair breakage, hydrates and is especially helpful for scalp issues like itchiness, flakiness and dandruff.
Nothing beats coconut oil as a moisturiser. Smear it on as soon as you step out of the shower when your skin is most absorbent. It works all over: body, face, hands, feet!
Blend high quality freshly made coffee with a couple of tablespoons of coconut oil. It’s delicious and it’s solid brain food!
