How does ECOrepel work as a DEET-FREE insect repellent to stop bites?

Insects who bite are attracted by a combination of smell, certain colour, carbon dioxide and heat. You may wonder if a natural insect repellent like ECOrepel really works. The facts are entomologists and regulators around the world have been recommending PMD (p-menthane-3,8-diol) as an alternative active ingredient amid increasing concerns about the neurotoxicity and high dermal absorption seen in DEET. Many conscious consumers have been seeking DEET free alternatives.

DEET is a strong plasticiser that can melt rain jackets, sandals and backpacks if not stored correctly. DEET mosquito repellent has oily feel and its strong chemical smell is unpleasant. Many people choose higher DEET concentrations thinking it works better, but all it does is make the effect last longer - which could have negative reactions on our skin.

PMD (p-menthane-3,8-diol) is an accepted active ingredient with the following agencies :
United States Environmental Protection Agency
Australia Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority
Canadian Pest Management Regulatory Agency
United Kingdom Fit for Travel NHS

PMD can be made synthetically or extracted from the best mosquito repellent plant. In nature, it is only found in small amounts in "young" oil, so it must be harvested from older leaves/twigs where the citronellal is turned into PMD under mildly acidic conditions. As you don't know the exact amount of PMD is in the aromatherapy oil you buy, some essential oil mosquito repellent may not be as effective as others. If a high concentration of such oil is used, application may lead to skin allergy/dermatitis in the presence of sunlight. Frequent reapplication is also needed.

We have been testing natural insect repellent’s active ingredients, and found PMDRBO sold under the brand name Citrepel75 the most effective in stopping bites. Extracted from the Java citronella plant, Citrepel75 contains at least 75% of the naturally occurring constituent PMD. Citrepel75 is registered under the EU Biocidal Products Directive (BPR) and is certified as a product of natural origin by ECOCERT. Plant-based PMD is a whole lot better for you and the environment.

So, if you are looking for an insect repellent for home that actually works, smells nice and is eco-friendly inside out, ECOrepel is the best choice for you. It jams mosquitoes’ short range radar. When you apply all over your exposed skin, the vapour from PMDRBO makes you “disappear” from mosquitoes when they get within a few centimetres of your skin. You can have several mosquitoes hovering around you, but none of them can find a good place to land for a bite. They eventually abort landing on your skin and fly away. No bites, no itch!

How does ECOrepel provide itch relief?

OK - we know we should have protected ourselves, but we are often in a rush and walk out of the house before applying ECOrepel, and then …. ouch!

Mosquitoes leave a small amount of saliva behind when they bite, and our skin’s immune system responds by triggering inflammation in the bite area which quickly starts to itch. Children are likely to develop more severe reactions to insect bites than adults, which is why a safe and effective mosquito bite relief for toddlers is a must have. Children may suffer big itchy bumps and occasionally large areas of swelling, soreness and redness commonly referred to as skeeter syndrome. Applying ECOrepel onto these areas will quickly alleviate itching. Bites also affect adults even though we may have become desensitised over time due to past bites. We still feel the itch and need the relief.

Dragon’s Blood is slowly infused in coconut oil to extract its strong anti-inflammatory effects and its natural colour. The red saps and resins from the tree of Dragon commonly known as Dragon's Blood (Botanical species: Croton, Dracaena, Daemonorops, and Pterocarpus) has been used for generations by indigenous cultures in the Amazon Riverbasic, Socotra, and Indonesia for its remarkable healing properties. Apply Dragon’s Blood infused ECOrepel with its healing chemical compounds to soothe itching, and remove pain and swelling from insect bites.

If you are looking for the best mosquito bite relief products, ECOrepel is the best choice.

What insect bites does ECOrepel protect against?

As a DEET-free insect repellent, ECOrepel is effective against disease-carrying insects such Mosquitoes, Midges, Ticks, Sand-flies and Horse-flies.

Efficacy studies of PMD Rich Botanic Oil have been conducted against the main Malaria vectors, such as Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles darlingi mosquitoes. More recent studies have focused on Aedes aegypti mosquitoes (the main vector for Dengue fever and Zika virus) and ticks (Lyme disease). All these studies indicate broad similarity in the levels of effectiveness with both PMD and DEET.

What are the ingredients in ECOrepel?

Are there other alternatives to repel mosquitoes?

Outdoor insect repellent such as ECOrepel is one way to protect against mosquito bites. But there are other steps you can take to help keep the bugs away when is mosquito season.

Cover up. Wear light coloured, long-sleeve shirts, long pants, socks, closed-toe shoes, and a hat when you go outside. Avoid outdoor shady areas and ensure you are under mosquito nets while sleeping. Clothing and nets treated with permethrin may also be considered.

Use fans/aircon. If the air is moving, mosquitoes will have a harder time landing on you. When you are sitting on the porch, turn on a fan.

Tip and Toss. Mosquitoes breed in standing water. Tip over items that you can’t dispose of to empty water where mosquito larvae may be found, such as:

  • Open buckets
  • Plastic covers
  • Trash can lids
  • Empty flower pots

How to apply ECOrepel correctly to stop insect bites?

Apply exactly like sunscreen; a few quick swipes and then spread ECOrepel evenly to protect exposed skin. There is no need to apply lots. Cover every inch of your exposed skin or the mosquitoes will home in on the uncovered area and bite there instead. It’s no good having a good repellent and not applying it thoroughly.

ECOrepel comes in an oval-shaped push-up paper tube. Use your thumb to push up 5 to 8mm, hold the tube while keeping your index finger on the base and apply thinly all over exposed skin. Unlike pump or spray products, ECOrepel enables fast and precise application, no drippy mess, or spills. Avoid pushing out more than 1 cm of ECOrepel from the tube. Pushing it back into the tube may shave off the sides of the product.

We have formulated ECOrepel so each application protects you for up to 4 hours. However, if you sweat, swim or if the climate is really hot and humid, you may need to re-apply more often. While ECOrepel is handcrafted from all natural ingredients, proper use is just as important. Please refer to “Is there any additional precaution to note?”

How to apply ECOrepel to soothe itches?

As soon as you feel an insect bite, resist scratching and apply ECOrepel immediately. Once you scratch, you actually sink the mosquito’s saliva deeper into your skin which triggers a bigger bump and a more intense itch. If the itch persists, reapply.

We have found ECOrepel brings great relief to red, swollen bites. Some of us stop itching upon first application, and others who have bigger reactions to bites require 2 to 3 swipes before the itchy feeling goes away. Once we stop scratching, we can prevent breaking our skin, and the potential open infection and long term scarring which can follow.

The after bite ingredients in Dragon’s Blood has been used for many centuries by indigenous populations in the Amazon to relieve skin reactions from insect bites. If you are looking for the best mosquito bite relief products, Dragon’s Blood infused ECOrepel is the best choice.

How often do I need to reapply?

ECOrepel protects for up to 4 hours. Like all insect repellents, hot and humid climates, your activities and other environmental factors will affect how long does mosquito treatment last. If you sweat, swim or the climate is really hot and humid, you may need to re-apply more often.

Do not apply ECOrepel over cuts, wounds, irritated or sunburned skin. Wash hands after applying, and before eating and drinking.

Do I apply sunscreen first or insect repellent first?

When is mosquito season, mosquitoes bite between dusk and dawn when you are unlikely to wear sunscreen, but the Aedes mosquito (Zika virus and Dengue fever carriers) bite in the day as well!

If you are also using sunscreen, apply sunscreen first and wait a few minutes before applying any outdoor bug repellent including ECOrepel. This allows your sun protection to set and penetrate the skin.

Is ECOrepel safe to use on children or babies?

Yes - the US Biopesticides and Pollution Prevention Division stated there is reasonable certainty of no harm to infants and children in the use of p-Menthane-3,8-diol in pesticide. PMD is placed into Toxicity Category IV for acute oral toxicity, dermal toxicity and skin irritation, and Toxicity Category I for eye irritation (Toxicity Category II for the end-use product). It is not a skin sensitiser.

In any case, young skin can be sensitive. Always apply a little ECOrepel to a patch of skin and monitor any reaction prior to using it on the whole body. If your child experiences itching, redness, a burning sensation, bumps or irritation - stop applying immediately. The French Group of Tropical Paediatrics recommends the use of skin-applied repellent as follows - 1 application daily for infants above 6 months; from ages 1 to 12 years, 2 applications daily may be safely used; 3 applications daily after 12 years old through adulthood.

If you are looking for a safe and effective mosquito repellent for kids that is not a DEET insect repellent, then ECOrepel is the best choice. Do not allow young children to handle this product. Do not apply to young children’s hands as they might rub their eyes or put their hands in their mouth. After returning indoors, wash treated skin with soap and water.

Is ECOrepel a safe mosquito repellent for pregnancy or breastfeeding?

None of the formal studies on PMD Rich Botanic Oil have included pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, so our direct knowledge is currently limited.

If you do need to use an insect repellent pregnant, a natural product such as ECOrepel would be a better choice as all the ingredients are 100% natural and very little is absorbed through the skin.

Do wash your hands after applying ECOrepel as you do not want to accidentally rub it off on to a newborn.

Can I use ECOrepel on my face?

Apply ECOrepel directly on your cheeks, nose, forehead, neck, behind the ears, but avoid eyes and mouth areas.

After returning indoors, cleanse face thoroughly with soap and water.

The product falls out of the tube when it's coming to an end, what can I do?

Our paper tube packaging allows you to use every last bit of the product. When the product comes to its last inch, it may detach itself from the tube. If so, just grab the product and spread it directly on your skin with your fingers.

Often in other single-use plastic insect repellent packaging, you’re unable to use all the product to the end simply because it becomes stuck to its plastic packaging. For ECOrepel you can use all the product and the left-over packaging is compostable, so you are getting better value and not hurting the environment.

Is there any additional precaution to note?

We have full disclosure of our ingredients. ECOrepel is a DEET-FREE bug repellent containing PMD Rich Botanic Oil, which, extensive testing has shown, has a low toxicity profile. It is not a skin sensitiser and is not classified as a dermal irritant.

If you accidentally rub ECOrepel on your eyes or mouth, rinse off with water. PMD Rich Botanic Oil, the active ingredient in ECOrepel, stings if it gets into your eyes. Hold your eye open and rinse slowly and gently with water for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present, after the first 5 minutes, then continue rinsing the eye. Seek medical help if irritation continues.

If you have a history of sensitive skin or you are not sure of your allergies, it is best to test a small amount of ECOrepel on your skin and monitor any reaction. ECOrepel contains low levels of naturally occurring allergen i.e. Citronellol, Limonene and Linalool. If you experience itching, redness, a burning sensation, bumps or irritation - stop applying immediately.

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling and before eating and drinking. Do not apply ECOrepel over cuts, wounds, irritated or sunburned skin.

Why should you use an insect repellent?

Mosquitoes aren't just annoying. Mosquitoes leave a small amount of saliva behind when they bite, our skin’s immune system responds by triggering inflammation in the bite area which quickly starts to itch. Children are likely to develop more severe reactions to insect bites than adults, which is why a safe and effective mosquito bite relief for toddlers is a must have. Children may suffer big itchy bumps and occasionally large areas of swelling, soreness and redness commonly referred to as skeeter syndrome.

Bites also affect adults even though we may have become desensitised over time due to past bites. In any event, when we keep scratching, we can break our skin, which may cause open infection and potential long-term scarring.

The mosquito is often called the most dangerous insect in the world. Their small bite has a big threat. Mosquito bites alone are responsible for spreading Malaria, Zika virus, Yellow-fever, Dengue, Japanese encephalitis, West Nile virus, Filariasis, Chikungunya virus and others. If you include insects such as sandflies, tsetse flies, ticks, lice and fleas you can add; Lyme disease, Leishmaniasis, Sleeping-sickness, Chagas disease, Typhus and Plague!

With effective natural insect repellent now available, there is no reason not to protect ourselves while enjoying the great outdoors. ECOrepel stops bites, relieves itches, smells nice and is eco-friendly inside out.

Is ECOrepel a mosquito repellents for Zika or Dengue??

Yes, recent efficacy studies of PMD Rich Botanic Oil, the natural active ingredient in ECOrepel have focused on Aedes aegypti mosquitoes (the main vector for Dengue fever and Zika virus). All these studies indicate broad similarity in the levels of effectiveness with both PMD and the established synthetic repellents, such as DEET against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

What are approved active ingredients for insect repellent?

The following insect repellent active ingredients are approved by European Biocidal Products Regulation, United States Environmental Protection Agency and Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA):

  • N,N-diethyl- meta-toluamide (DEET) found in Off deep woods
  • P-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD) found in Lemon eucalyptus oil or  Citriodiol®
  • KBR3023 - Picaridin found in Sawyer Products
  • IR3535 found in Avon skin so soft

In Hong Kong, skin-applied repellent products are not regulated by local authorities. We have therefore used the natural active ingredient P-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD) recommended by entomologists and regulators around the world.

PMD has a lower vapour pressure and provides very high protection from a broad range of insect vectors over several hours. PMD is only found in small amounts in "young" oil, so it must be harvested from older leaves/twigs where the citronellal is turned into PMD under mildly acidic conditions. With the aromatherapy oils you buy, you don't know the exact amount of PMD in the oils, so these essential oil bug repellent could be effective repellents for a few minutes or maybe a few hours. If high concentration of such oil is used, application may lead to skin allergy/dermatitis - which can worsen in the presence of sunlight and on sensitive skin.

So next time you want to purchase DEET mosquito repellent, consider products based on other active ingredients such as ECOrepel with plant-based PMD. We use higher grade PMD Rich Botanic Oil extracted from Java citronella plant - Citrepel75. It contains at least 75% of the naturally occurring constituent PMD and is registered under the EU Biocidal Products Directive (BPR) and is certified as a product of natural origin by ECOCERT.

Are there any insects and insect bites to worry about in Hong Kong?

Yes - mosquitoes, midges, sand-flies and ticks are most prevalent during our swelteringly hot and smotheringly humid summers. Midges, sand-flies and ticks are a nuisance when we are trying to enjoy being outdoors and their bites are irritating, but mosquitoes are considered one of the world’s most deadly animals. Their ability to rapidly spread deadly and disabling diseases to humans kills more people than any other creature in the world.

In recent years, Dengue fever, Chikungunya virus, Japanese encephalitis, Malaria and Zika virus infection are of public health concern in Hong Kong. If you are planning a trip to South America or South Asia countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Maldives and Indonesia, learning about the specific mosquito borne diseases and their prevention is highly advisable. We have compiled a short list relating to Hong Kong, please refer to Centers for Disease and Control prevention website for more information.

Mosquitoes love me ! Should I apply the strongest insect repellent?

Probably not. Testing has shown that a 95% concentration of DEET or any other insect repellent’s active ingredient such as PMD, doesn't stop insects biting any more than a concentration of 55% of DEET or PMD. The higher-concentration repellents last longer before needing to be re-applied but don't repel any more effectively than those with 55% concentration.

It is more important to apply outdoor bug repellent thoroughly for full protection. Spread ECOrepel like you would with sunscreen; a few quick swipes and spread evenly to protect exposed skin. There is no need to apply lots (it would just feel greasy) but do cover every inch of your exposed skin or the mosquitoes will home in on the uncovered area and bite there instead.

Anti-mosquito spray, lotion or stick, which one is best?

The main differences between anti-mosquito spray, lotion or stick are their texture, ingredients and application method. The right choice is whatever makes you feel the most comfortable. After application, remember you need to spread the outdoor bug repellent all over to cover every inch of your exposed skin, otherwise the mosquitoes will home in on the uncovered area and bite there instead.

Sticks like ECOrepel are usually in a travel sized insect repellent which you can toss into your hiking/camping bag, and not worry about spillage. You can apply by gliding with ease and without mess since it is solid with nothing to spill. You also have precise control over where you want to apply, especially around your face. It is good to try stick options that are neither heavy nor greasy. There is very little waste other than over-application when using a stick. Sticks' seemingly higher cost per gram is because they are usually formulated without water or alcohol, which makes them more compact and high performing than creams or spray.

Lotion or cream is easy to get a very precise coverage by putting a little on your hands and then spreading over the skin. It lasts longer than sprays since there is less product waste through spray drift and with high water content, it may be easier to spread and absorb into your skin. It is good to try options that are neither heavy nor greasy. Lotion or cream comes in bigger sized containers as the formulas include water, and they can be a bit messy to apply and accidental leaks inside bags do occur.

Pump spray repellent is better than aerosol spray. It has better control to apply in a breeze, it avoids overspray and its packaging is easier to recycle than pressurised aerosol spray cans. Do be cautious with application. Spray outdoor to reduce risk of inhaling the chemicals, do not spray on your face (spray on your hands and apply onto your face, avoiding eyes and mouth) and make sure you do not spray downwind since your family and friends standing next to you may inhale the spray drift. Pump spray usually features alcohol as a solvent to mix in the insect repellent’s active ingredients. If you are camping with bonfires or having a BBQ, applying pump spray repellent on your clothes and skin makes you flammable. Pump spray comes in bigger sized containers as the formula includes 50 to 70% water and alcohol, so its not travel friendly and accidental leaks inside bags do occur.

I am allergic to DEET, will I be allergic to ECOrepel?

ECOrepel does not contain DEET, alcohol, fragrance or any synthetic active ingredients such as Picaridin or IR3535.

We have full disclosure of our ingredients. ECOrepel contains PMD Rich Botanic Oil, which extensive testing has shown has a low toxicity profile. It is not a skin sensitiser and is not classified as a dermal irritant. On direct contact, it can irritate the eye. ECOrepel contains low levels of naturally occurring allergen of PMD Rich Botanic Oil and Cymbopogon nardus i.e. Citronellol, Limonene and Linalool.

If you have a history of sensitive skin or if you are not sure of your allergies, it is best to test a small amount of ECOrepel on your skin and monitor any reaction. If you experience itching, redness, a burning sensation, bumps or irritation - stop application immediately and wash with soap and water.

What does ECOrepel smell like?

ECOrepel has a well-rounded lemony scent, though it is much softer than pure lemon and has a subtle herbal tone.

Why does ECOrepel protect up to 4 hours only?

Many insect repellents promise many hours of protection. The facts are that the active ingredients’ ability to repel in any outdoor bug repellent (whether it’s DEET, Picaridin, IR3535 or PMD Rich Botanic Oil) will be affected by heat and humidity, and your activities after application.

In Asia, we believe claims of 6 to 8 hours, or more, may create a false sense of security. For our warmer and high humidity climate, it is more likely we will need to reapply throughout the day as often as every 4 hours - especially if outdoors.

Why did ECOrepel not work for me?

If you do not cover every inch of your exposed skin when applying any outdoor bug repellent, the mosquitoes will home in on the uncovered area and bite there. Apply ECOrepel like sunscreen; quick swipes and then spread it evenly all over. It’s no good having any good outdoor bug repellent and not applying it thoroughly.

ECOrepel protects up to 4 hours but, like all insect repellents; hot and humid climates, your activities and other environmental factors will reduce the duration of protection. if you sweat, swim or the climate is really hot and humid, you will need to re-apply more often.

You know you have not contributed to plastic waste in the landfills or in our oceans. It is the best insect repellent for camping and all outdoor activities.

How long does one tube of ECOrepel last?

Reducing waste is one of our core values to help protect our planet. You will notice that our products are not bulked-up with water or fillers but, instead, they are concentrated and high performing so that a little goes a long way. Apply ECOrepel evenly and thoroughly to ensure effective protection. Your challenge may be adjusting from the old ways of spraying or slapping a lot of products onto yourself.

ECOrepel lasts for two months if used regularly all over the body and on a daily basis. However, external circumstances such as temperature, exercise, humidity and the number of insects you are exposed to, will all have an effect on the duration of the repellent. Best to pack extras if you are going to a high risk destination like a jungle or rainforest, or if you are going to be with friends who mosquito’s love !

Is ECOrepel vegan and cruelty-free?

Absolutely, all our products are vegan! Nature has an abundance of wonderful botanical and mineral ingredients – there is no need to reach out to our friends in the animal kingdom

We don’t need to test our products on animals. Our products are made from natural ingredients from plants, seeds, fruits, trees and minerals, and are all within COSMOS standards. By its very nature, our products are safe and not harmful to you or the environment.

Can I use ECOrepel on my dog?

As a cruelty-free brand, we do not test our products on animals. All of our ingredients are 100% natural.

We are aware that the active ingredient in ECOrepel - PMD Rich Botanic Oil - has been used on products for the equine market but our ECOrepel has not undergone any tests or trials with animals.

What is the expiration date of ECOrepel?

Store away from heat (below 45°C) and do not expose ECOrepel to extreme temperatures. ECOrepel’s “Best Before” time window is 2 years from manufacture. We recommend using our natural products within 6 months of opening. Batch numbers and Best Before dates are both printed under the tube.

FAQs

How is ECOrepel eco-friendly inside out?

We believe that the way products are made, packaged and delivered make a better planet, and a better you. Each of our ingredients are carefully selected from Nature for you. ECOrepel is vegan, cruelty-free and our core ingredient - virgin coconut oil - is fair trade, so you are supporting communities that matter. With the COSMOS-standard as our guiding principle, all the ingredients we used in all our products are also fully sustainable and biodegradable.

Our oval shaped paper tube is the first of its kind. Our travel sized insect repellent is rolled by hand using cardboard lined with food-grade wax paper on the inside. It may take a bit of getting used to the push-up tubes, but it is absolutely worth it as every swipe of our ECOrepel is a vote for the type of world we want to live in.

If you notice any change in odour or appearance or damage to the packaging, replace the ECOrepel with a new product.

Insect repellent is amazing

We have tried every insect repellent for kids and nothing really worked well. But both my kids using coconut matter insect repellent now and it’s just amazing. They haven’t got bitten once ❤️ I gotta stock them up for the whole summer

ECOrepel took us 4 years from concept to launch - knowing it keeps your little ones bites free means so much to Diane ❤️

Finally, a zero-waste mosquito repellent that WORKS!

Asian mosquitos love to feast on me. This repellent actually WORKS. If I leave a tiny bit patch of skin uncovered by the repellent, I'll get bitten there still.. but the repellent does help to soothe the bites so they don't seem to get quite as inflamed and angry as before. The repellent has definitely helped to make walking the dog less pesty! :) I've just bought two more as my son needs this too and I don't want to run out, ever.

ECOrepel makes you disappear like Ninja. Once you swipe and spread all over uncovered areas, it jams insect's short range radar. They can't smell you, they wouldn't know where to land, and just fly away. if you miss a spot, your Ninja power is compromised and the insect will find the spot and bite you there :))
Hope your son enjoys being a Ninja.
